Office Sought: Senator - District 23

Age: 66

Occupation: teacher

Education:

BS from the University of Southern Maine in 1969, MSEd from University of Southern Maine in 1992, National Board Certified Teacher 2001.

Family:

I am a widow with three grown children ages 30, 32 and 38 and five grandchildren.

Hometown: Topsham

Why are you running for office? My hope is to bring a sense of reason and intelligence to Augusta in an effort to work across party lines for the betterment of Maine. We have a great state and can make it better if we listen to the will of the residents and strive to do what the people want and need.

Poltical Experience:

I served on the Topsham Finance Committee for many years, as co-chair and chair. I was also a Topsham Selectman. Once my husband was appointed as the town's first full-time Fire Chief, I felt a need to avoid any conflict of interest and no longer held any political office.

The federal health care law has offered to pay states to expand their Medicaid programs to provide health coverage to low income Mainers. Do you support Medicaid (or MaineCare) expansion? No

I favor broadening the Affordable Care Act. Medicaid expansion will cost the state an enormous amount in the long run as seen with the last expansion.

Reform of the state’s public assistance programs has been the focus of debates in the State House and on the campaign trail. Do you believe that the state’s welfare programs are too generous?Other

What, if anything, would you change about welfare? Some of the existing programs are too generous and some need to be increased. I would like to see stricter eligibility so that our tax dollars go further to assist those truly in need. I believe our residents could be far better served if we stopped supporting illegal immigrants with our limited resources. Until our hungry children and homeless veterans have their needs met, we have no business helping those who can help themselves.

Do you support raising the state’s minimum wage from $7.50 an hour?Yes

By how much?A gradual increase of the minimum wage is in order but I would like to see the Federal Government set a reasonable minimum wage.

Would you support legalization of marijuana? No

Please explain your position on legalization? My high school classroom experience provides evidence for me that marijuana use contributes to a lack of motivation and aspirations..
