Why are you running for office? I believe we can work together as Republicans, Democrats and Independents and get away from the past two years of name-calling and political bickering. I also want to work to improve the laws protecting children from sexual abuse and to strengthen the penalties for child sexual predators.

Poltical Experience:

6 years Maine House of Rep. 1976-82; 12 years Maine Senate 82-86 and 2004-2012; 8 years Maine Secretary of State

The federal health care law has offered to pay states to expand their Medicaid programs to provide health coverage to low income Mainers. Do you support Medicaid (or MaineCare) expansion?Yes

Personal healthcare is too expensive for most families and we need to find a way to provide good healthcare to everyone. Medicaid expansion is a good beginning especially since hospitals are continuing to go into debt having to serve the uninsured, too often in emergency rooms which is very expensive.

Reform of the state’s public assistance programs has been the focus of debates in the State House and on the campaign trail. Do you believe that the state’s welfare programs are too generous?Yes

What, if anything, would you change about welfare? In some programs there is clearly a need to eliminate the waste within the DHHS and do a better job of stopping abuse by those who misuse the system.

Do you support raising the state’s minimum wage from $7.50 an hour?Yes

By how much?Gradually over the years - from $7.50 to $9 over three years - similar to Michaud's plan.

Would you support legalization of marijuana? No

Please explain your position on legalization? This should be a citizen vote via a referendum - not something passed by the legislature.
