Occupation: State Senator

Why are you running for office? I want to continue the work I have been doing to represent my district in the Maine Senator. I am working on issues related to economic development, accepting our Maine share of Medicaid funding, college affordability and protecting our communities' share of revenue. I want to continue to connect citizens to their state government and what services are available to them and help people understand what is being done on their behalf in Augusta.

Poltical Experience:

Served on the Gorham Town Council '86 -'88; Maine House of Representatives : 1988 - 1994; Maine House of Representatives : 2006 - 2012; Maine State Senate: 2012 - 2014

The federal health care law has offered to pay states to expand their Medicaid programs to provide health coverage to low income Mainers. Do you support Medicaid (or MaineCare) expansion?Yes

I have been a supporter from the beginning, believing that we should work toward comprehensive healthcare and have the taxes we are paying in Maine for this program come back to the state.

Reform of the state’s public assistance programs has been the focus of debates in the State House and on the campaign trail. Do you believe that the state’s welfare programs are too generous? No

What, if anything, would you change about welfare? Our benefits are modest in comparison with other states, however we do need to be diligent about fraud and abuse by vendors and recipients. We should continue with the Ticket to Work process that identifies the barriers to work for recipients and addresses those needs so they can get back to work.

Do you support raising the state’s minimum wage from $7.50 an hour?Yes

By how much?I belief we should raise it and look at the impact at various levels but at least $10.00 hour.

Would you support legalization of marijuana?Yes

Please explain your position on legalization?I believe we should legalize, control and tax this product.
